What's Les Misérables about?

Based on the famous novel by Victor Hugo, the musical Les Miserables has been a huge success in London since the curtain first raised in 1982.

After 19 years of forced labour, Jean Valjean leaves prison. Just released, he robs a bishop who forgives him and encourages him to live an honest life. Eight years later, having become the honourable Monsieur Madeleine, Valjean swears to take care of Fantine's illegitimate daughter, little Cosette, whom he snatches from the Thénardiers’ grasp. To escape Inspector Javert who has discovered his true identity, Valjean finds himself a refugee in Paris and involved in the revolutionary movement of 1830, saving the life of Cosette's lover, Marius.

Why should you see Les Misérables?

Les Miserables is one of the biggest hits in musical history. More than 65 million people have seen it worldwide and it remains the longest-running musical in London.

But did you know that this show created by Claude-Michel Schönberg (music), and Alain Boublil (lyrics) is of French origin? Indeed, the first performance of Misérables took place in September 1980 at the Palais des Sports in Paris. Two years later, English producer Cameron Mackintosh adapted the show for London's West End, improving the orchestration, staging and structure of the show (from three acts to two acts).

"Les Miz" is an unmissable show, particularly because of its staging and legendary songs. The musical has won 3 Olivier Awards and 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical, proving its success. It also had a big screen adaptation in 2012 featuring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!), Eddie Redmayne (Fantastic Beasts), Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen!

A superb show with a fabulous cast and crew! Truly amazing experience that provides highs and lows, covering every emotion in between them. The set's and effects draw you in expertly, along with the orchestra playing fantastically! I will be going to the Sondheim again very soon, and can't remember a better show than Les Misérables.

So few words can fully describe how captivating and amazing Les Miserables was. I literally had my mouth open for a few parts. It was completely flawless and almost brought me to tears. The theatre I saw it in was also excellent with absolutely nothing blocking my view, and the sound quality was superb. The quality of the acting and the singing sent shivers down my spine. While the comedic relief was just the right amount. This is definitely my new favorite musical of all time.

Brilliant show, as ever. All the actors, scenery & stage management were excellent. We came all the way down from North Yorkshire to see the show and weren’t disappointed. The theatre is a superb example of one that has kept every bit of its original charm yet the seating is surprisingly comfortable. Sadly, we were in the 2nd row at the side of the grand circle so couldn’t see part of the stage, which was a shame, but other seats were a little too expensive for us pensioners.

Fantastic show. I would always dream about attending this incredible show, and finally, I made it. Everything is good about it, the story, the music, the cast, everything was spectacular. I was on my own, but next time, I will bring my wife. I wouldn't mind seeing it two or three times, it is worth it.

Having been to many musicals within London I was blown away at the quality and amazing version of the show. Absolutely nothing to complain about and the theatre staff were also amazing. Some guests came late into the showing but didn't disrupt a major song which was also good planning upon the staff's part.

Extremely moving. Amazing actors (with a very convincing Jean Valjean) and the music gave me chills. Having only known "Les Miserables" through Victor Hugo's novel, I wondered how this novel could be transformed into a good musical. Well, I was not disappointed with the result. The actors were able to evoke the atmosphere I felt while reading the novel: realistic and moving. Thanks to the production for having made this literary work a musical work. I'll listen to the songs again and again.
