What's The Lion King about?

Based on the Disney film, The Lion King was first performed on Broadway in 1997. Due to the unforgettable music by Elton John and spectacular staging by Julie Taymor, in just a few years The Lion King has become an unmissable show in London, where the show has been performing since 1999.

Simba, a lion cub, is raised by his father Mufasa, king of Pride Rock, who prepares to be king one day. But Scar, the king's brother, betrays him by plotting with the hyenas who lure Simba into a trap. Mufasa saves Simba but it costs him his life. Convinced he caused his father’s death, Simba flees into the jungle where he befriends Timon the meerkat and Pumbaa the warthog. As a grown up, he reconnects with his childhood friend, Nala, a lioness, who convinces him to restore justice in his native land. Simba will learn the truth about Mufasa's death, take revenge on Scar, and become king in turn, as the "circle of life" dictates.

Why should you see The Lion King?

A great theatrical machine, The Lion King first appeared as a cartoon produced by Disney in 1994. Three years later, Disney called on the director Julie Taymor who successfully depicts the cartoon's characters and sets using traditional theatre techniques (puppets, masks). This gives this stage version of the Lion King an identity and a charm that appeals to children and parents alike. The result? The 20 million dollar investment (a record figure at the time) was quickly earned back.

After more than 8800 performances, The Lion King is the eighth longest-running show in the West-End. It also holds the record for highest-grossing musical in history, grossing over $1.9 billion to date.

Here are some stats about the show:

  • The Lion King has been performed in every continent except Antarctica
  • It's been adapted into 7 different languages: Dutch, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Korean and Portuguese
  • It took 37,000 hours to make the puppets and masks used during the show
  • Each production employs an average of 150 people
  • 1 ticket is sold every 40 seconds around the world
  • Over 112 million people have seen The Lion King

The Lion King musical has won the most prestigious awards: 6 Tony Awards in the United States, 2 Olivier Awards in the United Kingdom, 3 Molières in France and 4 Helpmann Awards in Australia.

The show impresses both young and old alike. We're all fascinated by the beauty of the sets, the costumes and the staging. And to top it all off, we're happy to rediscover the great moments of the famous animated film from Disney studios!

In short, The Lion King is the perfect musical to go to with children!

Was amazing, saw the show maybe a decade ago when I was very young but my girlfriend had never seen it and she was blown away, she was so happy and was amazed by everything, the animatronics and the choreography was superb. The songs where expertly done and all the actors were so talented and especially the young ones, to be so brave and perform so well was commendable, overall such an amazing night and would 100% recommend to everyone.

I was initially curious about how a show filled with animal characters, adapted from one of the greatest animated films ever made, could effectively translate to the stage. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer impressiveness of the production. Every aspect, from the tiniest details to the virtuoso performances of the cast, left me in awe. It was evident that each scene had been meticulously crafted with a great deal of thought and care, ensuring that everything seamlessly fit into the musical. This show is a true testament to the art of adaptation and an absolute must-see for both fans of the original film and newcomers alike.

I went to see the show twice (the 2nd time with my wife as an anniversary gift). It was simply breath-taking. The flawless band performance was incredible. Astonishing costumes are a sight for sore eyes on their own. The actors were immersed in the story most of the time. Occasionally they rushed with the dialogue, but made up for it with perfect harmony singing. The imaginative scene intertwines everything together into a majestic musical. If you're into musicals, it's "to die for" (Scar talking to Simba). :)

Lyceum theatre a beautiful building with so much architecture to enjoy. Comfortable seats and very helpful staff. The bar staff work so hard and patiently to help to bring a lovely experience. Thank you guys! Mustn’t forget the guy selling the merchandise at the stalls bar, you did a grand job, I’m loving my hoodie!
Each show I’ve seen I always come away saying ‘best show’, this was most certainly the BEST show yet.
From the moment the lights went down and the singing started it was truly breathtaking.
This show will make the toughest cry! I cried so much with happiness, I was so touched by each performer that gave it their all, and touched my heart, and looking around so many.
The costumes and the amount of creativity gone into each detailed outfit is incredible.
The story is told so well with passion I wasn’t just in the audience I felt I was with you guys. Without spoilers for anyone that wants to see Lion King you’re not just focused to the stage.
All involved have worked so incredibly hard to bring such a show to us.
This was my best Birthday ever, thank you for creating a memorable milestone for me. I will be booking to see this show again.

We both loved the play. It was perfectly performed by the actors and the sets were very successful. They really reminded me of the movie, although it seems very difficult to play the role of an animal. The musicians were stunning. Sometimes we forgot it was live music because of how perfectly they were playing. We obviously recommend it, it’s a unique show!

Lion King is an absolute wild ride! This is a show that'll make you roar with excitement from start to finish. It's like stepping into an African savannah filled with jaw-dropping visuals, mind-blowing costumes, and great performances

I witnessed the circle of life unfolding right before my eyes, with a cast that brings the beloved characters to life with such passion and energy. The music? Oh, it's a symphony of catchy tunes that'll have you tapping your feet and belting out "Hakuna Matata" like you're part of the pride.

It's a show that'll have you laughing, crying, and feeling all the feels. Trust me, you won't want to miss this extraordinary theatrical experience!

Absolutely marvelous performance. The Lion King at its best. The overall ambiance and the inclusion of the stalls when the actors move through and about the podium and beyond that. The actors made the play come alive more than I had expected and I came in with high hopes. The percussionists in the royal circle working in tandem making this play a well deserved 5/5 star performance.
